State Troopers are out in full force this Mardi Gras, but is the added presence working?

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – “When they cross the line, we step in,” says Colonel Mike Edmonson with the Louisiana State Police.

He says the added patrols are a visual deterrent that’s working this Mardi Gras.

“I believe it’s making a difference. I know it is. Just last night we had problems on Canal Street, so I have uniformed patrols on Canal Street working that area,” says Edmonson.

WGNO News spotted several state troopers up and down Bourbon Street Tuesday. It’s obvious there is an increased trooper presence.

Edmonson says almost 200 troopers are patrolling the city of New Orleans.

“Somebody said today ‘Hey Mardi Gras ends at midnight, it’s over for you all.’ I said no. That’s not true. Our work continues. Mardi Gras may end, but we don’t.”

Almost one million people from all over the globe visit New Orleans for Mardi Gras each year.

It’s a playground for adults that can get out of hand.

And that’s why Colonel Edmonson is encouraging his troopers to ask questions if something looks suspicious.

He says state police need reasonable suspicion to ask questions and probable cause to make an arrest.

It’s a proactive approach to crime fighting.

We’ve had over 130 arrests, almost 235 charges, 13 weapons taken off the street over the last 2 weekends. 7 stolen cars,” says Edmonson.
