NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Clp. Burt Hazeltine, the sheriff’s deputy shot while directing traffic in a school zone has been released from the hospital, St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne announced on Facebook.

Champagne said, “I am thrilled to announce that by the Grace of God Corporal Burt Hazeltine has been released from the hospital to continue his recovery at home!! We thank everyone for your prayers and support!!!”

Hazeltine was shot three times; eye, arm, and chest last Thursday, April 16, 2015.

After the shooting, he was rushed to University Hospital in New Orleans.

Hazeltine was working his usual detail near the intersection of Highway 90 and Louisiana Street when police say he was shot by John Paul Devillier. It’s believed that Devillier shot Hazeltine because he didn’t stop traffic so he could make a left turn.

Below is a video of Hazeltine returning to St. Charles Parish Tuesday evening.
