(WGNO) – Former New Orleans Saints player Darren Sharper is expected to receive a 20-year prison sentence for the drugging and raping of women in Louisiana, the New Orleans Advocate reports. But the 39-year-old may only serve about half of that sentence.
The paper cites a source familiar with the deal.
The prison sentence is part of a global deal involving four states. On Monday, Sharper accepted an 8-year deal in Nevada and a 9-year deal in Arizona.
Sharper also pleaded no contest to sex assault charges in Los Angeles. He is expected to be sentenced to 20-years in prison for his crimes there, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Sharper’s sentencing in California was pushed back until July 15, 2015.
Sharper is being allowed to serve the sentences at the same time — rather than consecutively. But as part of the multi-state deal Sharper will serve less than half of the 20-year sentences. TMZ reports that Louisiana and California prosecutors agreed to give Sharper a credit of 11 years after he served 9 years in prison.
A spokesman for the district attorney’s office in New Orleans, Chris Bowman declined to comment, “at this point, I am told that we will not have any comment on this matter until Sharper pleads guilty.”
Sharper has been serving time in Los Angeles since last year.
The Advocate reports Sharper is expected to appear in a federal court in New Orleans on April 6.
Sharper retired from the NFL in 2011 after winning a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints.
Last week, Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro announced that former New Orleans Saints player Darren Sharper would plead guilty to charges stemming from investigations in Louisiana, Arizona, Nevada, and California as well as federal charges.
