Early Monday’s dense fog may have contributed to at least one crash on the causeway bridge, shutting down operations both ways for about 45 minutes.

“It’s been a long foggy day,” says bridge general manager Carlton Dufrechou , recalling what he describes as a dynamic day. “It started for us at 12:01 am this morning.”

Dufrechou says morning weather conditions created a perfect recipe for low visibility, “The bigger problem was that the temperatures and dew points were identical.”

The fog rolled in and out.

Then back in again.

Then when another weather fog-filled front came in from the south, a double whammy, “About mid-day we had an actual collision almost simultaneously when we had a tremendous amount of fog.”

The bridge was closed while crews cleared wreckage until the fog finally lifted for the day, “We are anticipating the evening commute will run fine, and hopefully we will not have any more convoys or single lane operations for the rest of this evening.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reminds drivers that by slowing down “and” maintaining a wider distance between the car in front will help avoid a collision when the fog rolls back in again.
