NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Harrah’s New Orleans Hotel and Casino wants to build two courtyards, complete with slot machines for smokers in response to the citywide smoking ban.

For now, smokers are gathering in open areas near casino entrances.

The city’s smoking ban went into effect on April 22, 2015 prohibiting cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes and vaporizers from most bars stadiums and indoor public spaces.

Harrah’s was a vocal opponent to the new ordinance.

The courtyard proposal will go before the city planning commission for public hearing and recommendation before heading to the city council for a decision.
