NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Friends and family of 21-year old Brittany Thomas are trying to cope with her death. Brittany was one of the ten people shot Sunday morning on Bourbon Street. WGNO News Anchor Vanessa Bolano speaks with one of Brittany’s friends who talks about the terrifying moments during and after the attack.

“One minute your mad.One minute you’re crying, and you just don’t know how to feel about it because she’s, she didn’t deserve it,” says close family friend Tametra Spears.

21-year old Brittany Thomas of Hammond died around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Police say she had been in critical condition since being shot.

Family tell WGNO, Brittany was set to graduate from nursing school in August and was celebrating with several friends in the French Quarter.

Friends tell us Brittany had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head when shots rang out Sunday in the 700 block of Bourbon Street.  She was among five men and five women injured.  Three victims currently remain in the hospital.

“We’re talking about someone who was full of life, loved to go and have fun and just live her life. She didn’t have kids, she graduated from high school and college; going to do something,” says Spears, “I can’t say that nothing is being done. Something is being done, but when it happens to you like that and someone that close to you, you want something done now.”

Her family says Brittany had to be revived at the hospital, and was placed on life support.

Brittany had just turned 21 in April. Her friend describe her as a woman who was full of life and energy.

Mayor Landrieu issued this statement on Brittany Thomas’s death:

“Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with the family of Brittany Thomas. This type of tragedy strikes at the heart of who we are as a people and as a city. Now more than ever we need the community to come forward with information to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
