NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – “The theatrical rights to the Vampire Chronicles are once again in my hands, free and clear!”
That’s how Anne Rice broke the news to her Facebook fans that the vampire Lestat may be coming to TV.
The New Orleans-born author says that she and her son, Christopher Rice, are working on a pilot for a TV series based on her Vampire Chronicles novels.
In 1994, the film adaption of her novel Interview with a Vampire was one of the highest-grossing movies in a year that also saw Forrest Gump, The Lion King, and Pulp Fiction hit theaters.
Two years ago, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment picked up the rights to the Vampire Chronicles series. Rice says they had planned to make more movies based on the novels. But, she says it didn’t work out.
Instead, Lestat fans may get a Game of Thrones-style TV series instead, according to Rice. She writes , “In this the new Golden Age of television, such a series is THE way to let the entire story of the vampires unfold.”
Rice is currently on tour promoting her newest book Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis: The Vampire Chronicles. It is the 12th installment of the series, which began in 1976 with Interview with a Vampire.
According to her Facebook post, the TV series will start with her second Vampire Chronicles novel, The Vampire Lestat. Her son will be the lead executive producer of the TV series. And, Rice will act as an executive producer.
Rice says she will be asking for input from fans about the planned TV series on Facebook.
