NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Today Adam Acquistapace of Acquistapace’s Covington Supermarket is going to help you sound like a wine expert.
If you’ve ever read the back of a label, it will say something like raspberry, dark cherry, sweet wildflowers, bright, fresh, spicy, all descriptors. There’s nothing but grapes in here. There aren’t any apples or anything else in this wine.
Those descriptors help describe the wine to you. Here’s a trick, anytime you go to a party and you want to sound like a wine expert, here are some hints.
All red wines will smell and taste like some sort of cherry or berry.
All white wines will smell and taste like some sort of apple or pear.
Then you just make up the rest. That’s right, literally just make up the rest. Just smell the glass and anything else that comes to your mind. Things like lavender, it doesn’t really matter.
The so-called experts that are writing the descriptions are very creative, but at the end of the day they’re just like you. They smell and taste just like we do, they just have this repertoire of vocabulary in their brain.
So the next time you go to a party and you want to help describe the wine, think red wine as a sort of berry or cherry, white wine as an apple or pear, and you will always get it right.
