Going to Italy? Adam Acquistapace breaks down the varietals you need to try

Going to Italy this summer? Let Adam Acquistapace of Acquistapace’s Covington Supermarket take you around the map and give you some great recommendations.

Italian wine. If you’re heading northeast, around the Venice or Verona area, you’re going to want to try pinot grigio. The white wines are very clean and crisp while the reds are a little more juicy. Over in the northwest, places such as Piedmont have great wines. Nebbiolo is king, and both Barbera and Dolcetto are important. Then moving on to the central parts of Italy, the Tuscany region, you’ll want to try anything from Chianti,  Montepulciano or Montecchio. The grape variety Sangiovese is great there. These wines can be a little woody and spicy, with a little more red cherry.

If we keep going south, we’ll end up in Sicily where the important grape varieties are nero d’avola, syrah and frappato for the reds. However just like the varieties in the north, nero d’avola is the king in the south. The weather is very warm down south, so the wines end up much richer and more robust.
