NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – News with a Twist is bringing back our popular Uncorked series, giving wine novices an expert’s take on what you should be drinking.

We start off with one of the more common white wines – chardonnay.

Richard Ellis of Brady’s Wine Warehouse on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard gives us the ins and outs of this diverse wine.

“One of the more concerning things I’m noticing from my desk … is that people are saying, ‘I don’t like chardonnay,’ usually because they don’t like one particular style of chardonnay. They don’t realize there are multiple styles available,” Ellis says.

Ellis explains that chardonnay flavors can vary from green apply to very buttery. It can also be mineral-driven or fruity.

“The point is that if you don’t like one, I encourage you to try another,” Ellis says.

If you don’t like buttery, oaky chardonnay, Ellis recommends you try a Chablis, which is “very clean and mineral-driven.”

“There’s something to be said about the middle of the spectrum,” he says. “Most people in Burgundy and parts of California and the rest of the wine world consider oak a seasoning.  It’s like a steak, too much and it throws the whole thing out of whack.  If you do it with control … and appropriate to the quality of the wine, then it’s a good thing.”
