WGNO

The house used in ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ is one of the most haunted houses in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – It’s said to be the most haunted house in New Orleans.

The Lalaurie Mansion is located in the French Quarter and was also used for the exterior shots of Kathy Bates’ character in American Horror Story: Coven.

The house is massive, uniquely beautiful, and was home to actor Nicholas Cage at one time. But, in the early 1800s, it was all but a pleasant place to live if you were a slave.

The resident of the house at that time was Delphine Lalaurie. She and her husband threw magnificent parties and had many slave servants.  One day at one of the parties, the house was set on fire.

Guides with Haunted History Tours say when the fire department reached the Lalaurie Mansion and found their way to the attic, they found a horrible sight. Slaves were chained to the floor and walls. Some of the slaves looked as if they were used for weird experiments: limbs were missing, skin pulled back, all sorts of horrible things.

It is still unknown today what really happened to the Lalauries. They could have laid low in the country or even moved back to France.
