Paul Morphy Chess Tournament showcases New Orleans best

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A new “Big Kahuna” of New Orleans chess is crowned at the 42nd annual Paul Morphy Memorial Chess Tournament.

The top area chess players went head to head, putting Twist reporter Tyler Wing, stuck between a pawn and a hard place.

New Orleans born Paul Morphy is widely considered the greatest chess player of all time.

Morphy’s style of play was aggressive; often sacrificing his queen then somehow maneuvers a sneak-attack checkmate with less versatile pieces

US Chess Master Jude Acers is widely considered the greatest chess player in New Orleans currently, and he selects who plays.

Five rounds. Two games a round. Fifteen minutes on the clock.

In the end Mr. Sam “Cash Only!” Cavett is the champion, “It’s just an honor to know Jude and his passion and love for the game challenges me as a person.”
