NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — If a person can truly see music as well as hear it, it would have to be at The Music Box.  If you’ve heard — and seen — the sounds, then you know what we’re talking about. The Music Box is a traveling display of large music-making contraptions.  They’re outfitted with pulleys, levers, propellers and other devices that are used to create all kinds of sounds. The collection can be transported from place to place, but it’s not a simple job.  And soon, the nomadic ways of The Music Box will come to a cheerful end when it opens to the public on its new, permanent site in the Bywater neighborhood. The Music Box is run by the New Orleans Airlift non-profit group.  The new, permanent space includes 55,000 square feet of forest and a metal fabrication warehouse.  The group hopes to open its new village in October of this year. But while the group has the land, it’s hoping to raise $60,000 to help cover the costs of the land, landscaping, construction of a parking lot, drainage, and other necessities.  Click here for a link to the group’s crowdfunding campaign which is set to close on July 5th. The group began operating in 2011.  Tens of thousands of people have enjoyed the moveable, musical houses, but not just in New Orleans’ City Park.  They’ve also been to Atlanta, Tampa, and Shreveport. Future plans for The Music Box include the creation of a membership program for supporters as well as an expanded series of guest musicians to help make the music. WGNO profiled the group in 2015.
