NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Now we’ve all heard of selfies, but have you heard of safies? Safies are selfies with a purpose, that are intended to help a great cause! News with a Twist Reporter Kenny Lopez explains what safies are all about!

Everyone takes selfies, but have you ever taken a safie?

What’s a safie you ask?  Well, safies are a selfie with a purpose.  They’re the brainchild of New Orleans based creative marketing firm, Hero Farm.

Hero Farm came up with the idea to raise money for Covenant House, a crisis center for homeless youth.

“We’re encouraging people to take a selfie of themselves in front of their home address or in front of any address, to represent this is a safe place to sleep at night,”  Richard Arnold at Covenant House said.

Here’s how to join in the campaign:

  •  Take a #SAFIE– a “safe selfie” – of the street number where you sleep SAFELY or ANY address where you feel comfortable, and then share it to your favorite social media with the hashtag #SAFIE and a pledge to donate that amount for homeless kids
  •  Make a donationto the youth homeless organization of your choice in the amount of your street address number (Example: 1210 Bienville = $12.10 donation)

•  Share your support of an organization or #CHSleepOut participant by donating, volunteering, or helping to spread awareness about youth homelessness

The safie campaign ties in with Covenant House’s annual “Sleep Out”, where 150 community and business leaders will sleep on the street to raise funds for homeless kids.

“Our kids are some of the most damaged in our community.  What this safie campaign does is it supports kids who don’t have a safe place to sleep at night,”  Arnold said.

Covenant House’s “Sleep Out” will take place on Thursday, November 19th.  The “Sleep Out” coincides with National Homeless Youth Awareness Month.

If you do take a safie, don’t forget to hashtag safie (#safie) on social media.
