Oscars Expert Predictions from Turner Classic Movies

NEW ORLEANS — As Turner Classic Movies is in the throws of their “31 Days of Oscars” celebrations, we sat down with hosts Alicia Malone and Dave Karger to pick their brains on all things Oscars and asked what they were excited about…

Malone told WGNO’s Kinsey Schofield, “I know that both Dave and I are really big fans of the movie Roma by Alfonso Cuaron. We both saw it at the Telluride Film Festival and cried – so many tears! So for me, I was really excited to see it nominated for best foreign film but best picture – and for best director and two acting nominations as well. I really hope it’s Roma’s night and they walk away with best picture.”

When it comes to Bradley Cooper’s Oscars snub, Karger thinks it’s bigger than the movie itself… “I think it’s really hard to do really well at the Oscars if you’re a remake. Only one remake which is The Departed, which most people don’t know is a remake has won best picture… so I think there might a little bit of prejudice against film that is a remake among the Academy voters.”

This year the show will be host-less. Will that hurt or help the experience? Malone says both… “I think they’re going to have plenty of star power in terms of the presenters that come on stage and it’s going to be a faster show, I think. I think the moment I will really miss the show is the opening monologue.”
