5th annual Rougarou Fest brings spooky flair, folklore to downtown Houma

5th Annual Rougarou Fest

“The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It is also the primary fundraiser supporting the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit, tax exempt organization, that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast. USA Today recently ranked the Rougarou Fest as one of the Top 10 Best Costume Parties in the United States, and the Southeast Tourism Society selected the Rougarou Fest as a Top 20 Event during the month of October out of eleven states in the southeast United States.” ~ RougarouFest.org

The food court will offer traditional Cajun selections including gumbo, jambalaya, blackberry dumplings, pop rouge ice cream and more.

A costume contest will be held at 5 p.m. on the court house steps.  Registration for the costume contest begins at 2 pm.  Pets are welcome to wear their costumes, as well, but must be kept on a leash at all times.

The Krewe Ga Rou Parade will roll at 7 PM starting in the Town Hall parking lot located on the corner of Barrow Street and Tunnel Boulevard.  The parade will then roll up Barrow Street, turn left on Main Street and go down to Grinage Street where it will disband. Following the parade, the Rougarou himself will be available to pose with visitors for photos in the court square.

Downtown music venues are encouraged to continue the festival within their own establishments with festival themed offerings after 10PM.
