C & C Heating & Air Conditioning says new heat pump technology helps homeowners save money

The leading Detroit heating experts say updated technology works efficiently even in very cold climates and is also eco-friendly

DETROIT, Feb. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- C & C Heating & Air Conditioning, a leading Detroit-area heating and cooling company with more than seven decades of experience, is educating homeowners on the benefits of modern heat pump technology. These advancements make heat pumps a viable option even in cold climates, providing an energy-efficient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems.

"When heat pumps first gained popularity, they weren't efficient in very cold temperatures because they had difficulty drawing heat from the colder ambient air," said Dayna Hottle, general manager of C & C Heating & Air Conditioning. "But with the improved compressors and enhanced coil designs that have larger surface areas, they can work just as well in cold climates as they have in the more moderate areas of the country. Heat pumps no longer have to be limited to warmer climates which his good news for people who live in the northern United States who want to save money."

Hottle said heat pumps are often more efficient than furnaces or boilers because they don't generate heat, which results in significantly less energy consumption. They also don't burn fossil fuels, which is a plus for the environment.

"But one of the best things about heat pumps is that they can also cool the air in the hotter months," she said. "Heat pumps pick up heat from the outside and transfer it to the inside during the winter, but do the opposite during the summer. That means that homeowners don't have to have both an air conditioner and a furnace. Heat pumps are an all-in-one alternative."

Hottle said heat pumps can save the average household about $500 a year on their utility bills.

Hottle said the only downside is that heat pumps can cost more to install because they require specialized equipment and, in some jurisdictions, may require additional permitting.

"Like traditional air conditioning units, heat pumps use refrigerant to run properly, even in winter," she said. "If you decide to have a heat pump installed, make sure your contractor is licensed, certified and understands how to properly install a heat pump."

Hottle said that because heat pumps use refrigerants to run, all new residential and light commercial heat pumps are subject to the new 2025 regulations and will require the new A2L refrigerants.
