SHREVEPORT (KTBS) – Authorities have identified the Shreveport police officer was shot and killed while she was off-duty Wednesday night.

Officer Chateri Payne was killed in what is being called “domestic violence.”

According to Shreveport Police , the shooting happened just before 8:30 P.M. near the intersection of Midway and Linwood Avenues.

Authorities say Officer Payne was in uniform at the time of the shooting, and was shot while entering her patrol vehicle. The vehicle was running when officers arrived.

More than 50 police units responded to the shooting along with more than 10 Caddo Parish deputies.

Shreveport Police Cpl. Marcus Hines says other officers responded to a call of shots fired and discovered the female officer with life-threatening injuries at the scene.

She was taken to an area hospital where she later died.

Police say a witness was detained and questioned, but is not in custody at the moment.

There was also a child at the home when the shooting took place. It is not known if the child is Payne’s, however she was the mother of a young child.

Officers want the public to know the shooter is still at large and could possibly be armed.
