METAIRIE – Two officers suffered minor injuries during a rolling shootout across Metairie overnight.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded about 1:45 a.m. to a complaint of people pulling on car door handles in the area of Edenborn Avenue and Shellie Street in Metairie.

The responding deputy witnessed a number of people enter into a 2016 Mazda 6.

When the deputy approached the Mazda, one person in the stolen car got out and pointed a gun at the deputy. The person driving the car accelerated toward the deputy.  The officer dove to safety while firing his weapon at the perpetrator in self-defense.

Deputies then began a chase traveling west on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. At the intersection of Cleary and Veterans, one of the suspects, while hanging out of the stolen car, began firing a handgun at the deputies who were in pursuit. JPSO deputies returned fire, but no one was hit.

The chase ended in the 100 block of Veterans near the parish line at the levee in Kenner.

One of the suspects got out of the car while pointing a handgun at deputies. Deputies fired at the suspect, who then fled on foot along the levee and threw his weapon.

The remaining four suspects inside of the stolen car were arrested without further incident. Following a brief search, the fifth suspect was found in an industrial yard on West 27th Street hiding in an abandoned boat.

Deputies also found a stolen gun inside the stolen car.

The five suspects are facing multiple charges, including vehicle burglary, attempted murder of a police officer, resisting arrest, and illegal possession of a firearm.

Two JPSO deputies were treated for injuries at a local hospital.
