METAIRIE – The Jefferson Parish Fire Department battled a two-alarm fire this morning on Airline Drive and Division Street.

Jefferson Parish East Bank Consolidated Fire Department Provisional Fire Chief Dave Tibbetts said eight fire companies responding to the scene around 6:45 a.m. found two buildings already engulfed in flames.

The firefighters worked diligently to save an apartment building that Tibbetts said is just 18 inches away from the back of one of the buildings.

No one was in the two buildings at the time of the fire, Tibbetts said, and it is too soon to determine the cause of the blaze.

The fire, which produced a smoke plume that can be seen across much of the metro area, appears to have originated at Hubcap Heaven on Airline.
