“They called us in one at a time and they informed us, well they informed me, that after six and a half years of service that next week i will be terminated,” says Sociology Professor Martin Katz.
Professor Katz teaches seven classes at Delgado Community College.
He spent four years there to get full time status.
“It seems crazy!”
Katz is one of 115 faculty members and staff being cut effective June 3rd.
Also eliminated are about 15 degree and certificate programs.
“I hate to say it but it’s sad, sad, sad.”
“I’m a little shocked, that’s all plain shocked.”
“If there’s no teachers then how are we going to go to school and get a better education.”
“That’s really a shame because this is our future right here in the colleges.”
It’s the second round of cuts this year all in an effort to save millions and correct a budget deficit.
Chancellor Monty Sullivan says, “Today delgado is primarily funded through tuition not by the state. the student body needs to grow.”
Professor Katz says he’s leaving Louisiana to find work.
“I feel like Bobby Jindal is against education, and his cuts have really cut deep.”
