NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Is it a UFO? Or some sort of paranormal activity? People in New Orleans were curious enough about the rainbow lights to drive the distance and find out what it’s all about, only to learn that it’s just a part of man-made creativity.

Global Rainbow is now being featured at Luna Fete in Lafayette Square. The rainbow laser light show has been featured in cities such as France, New York City, Mexico City, and Miami.

With a background in film, Mattern was mostly inspired by Blade Runner, which has had a lot of influence in her work.

“You can actually see this rainbow could exist in a landscape of Blade Runner,” Mattern said.

Projectors that shoot a single beam of light are custom made just for this show. The lasers are so powerful that it can be seen as far as 50 miles in the air.

The idea for this particular rainbow display came from a real rainbow over a pond in Massachusetts.  Mattern then had the idea to create a light work on the scale of a real rainbow.

Luna Fete, a visual, illuminated arts festival, started Wednesday and lasts through Saturday, Dec. 10 at Lafayette Square. It’s from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. each night.
