NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Audubon Nature Institute’s Director of Education Projects, Brenda Walkenhorst, visited the Twist set today to challenge LBJ and Susan Roesgen to a “Would You Eat It?”

She also made sure to wish them a very  “Hoppy” Thanksgiving with her cricket pumpkin pie. Sounds gross, but it’s actually quite tasty – and full of protein!

The recipe is easy: Just use your traditional pumpkin pie recipe, but first, roast crickets on a baking sheet for 30 minutes at 350 degrees before you make the pie. You can either add the crickets to the pie batter, top the pie with crickets, or do both.

Do you want to add some pizzazz to your cornbread stuffing? Boiling meal worms with some seasonings makes your stuffing even better (certainly buggier). Meal worms are beetle larvae, after all, so think of it as serving grubs with the gobbler, and you have this stuffing with your turkey.

Finally, for a memorable cranberry sauce: Poach wax worms in a 1:6 sugar-water mixture for three minutes, and then strain the water and add the wax worms to your sauce – so good!

You can taste these delectable treats for yourself Wednesday, November 23, from  10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium,  located at 423 Canal St. in downtown New Orleans. Click here for more info.
