NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) –  Hurricane Matthew has been upgraded to a Category 3 storm with winds reaching 115 mph.

The hurricane is projected to keep moving west Friday before it moves to the west-northwest Saturday night. The center of the storm is expected to go north of the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia and stay in the Caribbean Sea through early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters predict the hurricane will cross eastern Cuba and the Bahamas before it turns into the Atlantic Ocean.

A tropical storm warning has been issued from the Colombia/Venezuela border to Riohacha. A hurricane watch might be issued for Jamaica later today, forecasters said.

It is not expected to impact the United States.
