NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans is known for being a city that hosts a lot of Super Bowl games.  The latest such event wrapped up just this week, but it had nothing to do with football. Instead, this Super Bowl — of sorts — was all about manholes, sewage pumps, and speed.  The Water Environment Federation hosted its annual Technical Exhibition and Conference in New Orleans at the Morial Convention Center.  The event brings together all of the latest technology, top experts, and best practices for anything and everything about the use of water.
A big part of the event includes a competition that’s a lot like what you might see lumberjacks or firefighters doing.  It’s a series of events that test the speed of workers.  But in this case, those workers are the people who fix pipes and keep the sewage moving in cities and countries from around the world. The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board was just one of dozens of teams that made the trip.  To get there, teams already had to compete in a series of state and regional competitions.  Go ’round at the convention center was for the world championship. The S&WB team is called the Water Dogz.  The guys previously won first place in a state-wide competition in Louisiana and finished second at a regional event in Texas. But now, all the top teams from other states and even other countries like Canada and Argentina were also in the house.  The events covered everything from patching a water main to rescuing an injured person in a manhole. It was a tough series of test, and a few things didn’t quite roll the Water Dogz’s way.  So the guys didn’t place in any of the events.  But their team leader, Jerome Marshall, was recognized for his leadership.  Marshall helped coach-up some of the other teams like the men from Argentina who were seeing some of the events for the first time.
