NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman and the Department of Justice have settled on the future of the parish jail.

The agreement allows Gusman to choose an independent jail compliance director to make sure federal guidelines set in the 2013 consent decree are being implemented.

Gusman will pick from three candidates chosen by the feds then a judge will have the final say on who the compliance director will be.

That director will be in charge of day-to-day operations, coming up with a plan to reduce violence in the jail, and responsible for handling the jail’s budget.
