NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – It’s not just June 21 any more.

It’s International Yoga Day.  And it’s official.

The United Nations General Assembly officially declared it.

WGNO News with a Twist features guy Wild Bill Wood gets on the mat with yoga people in New Orleans at the Cabildo.

Yoga folks believe just five minutes of yoga a day can transform your life.  Yoga makes you feel and think better.

The benefits are deeper than a big back bend.

Yoga enhances vitality, focus, memory and productivity.

Yoga stabilizes the body, mind and emotions.

Also, you get stronger as you stabilize your spine.  Yoga helps relieve back pain, stress, anxiety and tension.

Of course,  most people who don’t practice yoga ask, what exactly is this yoga business?

Well, yoga started as a spiritual practice.  The word yoga comes from the language of Sanskrit.  And that’s an ancient Indian spiritual practice.

Yoga means, literally, to yoke, to join, a union that is.  When you practice yoga, you join mind, body and spirit.

Most people think yoga is just a bunch of stretching.  Just a bunch of people twisting themselves into human pretzels.

Yoga does make you more flexible.  That’s really a side benefit of yoga that creates a balance in your body.

Wild Bill wants you to see yoga people doing yoga at the Cabildo, the seat of colonial government in New Orleans.

This historic place becomes a sacred yoga space three times a week.

You’re invited to join them on the mat.
