NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Here’s a look at the work to repair the Canal Street sinkhole. The work area can be accessed through a stairwell leading underground through the parking garage at Harrah’s Casino.
The sinkhole formed on April 29 when a portion of an underground tunnel collapsed.  It wasn’t a complete surprise because city workers discovered the failing wall and noticed the pavement above it beginning to sink in the days leading up to the collapse.  The road around the trouble spot was cut off to traffic, and nobody got hurt when the pavement finally fell. The sinkhole motivated the Sinkhole de Mayo party a few days later.  The city also noticed people trying to get close to the site, so they surrounded the work site with a tarp to keep the public a safe distance away. The work to repair the sinkhole is expected to take 3-6 months.  The underground tunnel was created in the 1960s and was intended to be part of a freeway project that never happened. While workers make repairs and pour a new concrete wall to replace/repair the old one, they are also assessing the rest of the tunnel which runs from Canal to Poydras streets.
