NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Who let these dogs in?

The Krewe of Barkus, that’s who.  Barkus is the Mardi Gras krewe with a parade of dogs.

More than 2,000 dogs will parade on Sunday, January 31 at 2pm.  The stars of this show are the King and Queen of Barkus.

It’s tradition for them to do lunch at Galatoire’s Restaurant on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.  And WGNO News with a Twist features guy Wild Bill Wood went with them.

This year’s king is a Blue Weimaraner named Alex.  He’s eight.  He weighs 80 pounds now.  But when he was rescued about a year ago, he weighed less than half of that.

You’ll see a picture of what Alex looked like then in Wild Bill’s story.

His queen is a five pound long haired Chihuahua mix.  Her name is Nee Nee.  She’s also a rescue.

Her entire name is Nee Nee Sprang.  She belongs to Elizabeth and Curt Sprang.

That’s the same Curt Sprang you watch every night on News with a Twist at Ten.  And on News with a Twist at Eleven on NOLA 38, the CW.

At the lunch, the King and Queen of Barkus munched on lamb chops.  But their human handlers had to keep them separated for fear the king would actually eat the queen.
