NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – In an incredibly close race, Jefferson Parish President John Young was edged out of the lieutenant governor race by just 1 % during Saturday’s elections.

After the polls closed at 8 p.m. Young was neck-and-neck with Plaquemines Parish President Republican “Billy” Nungesser and the Mayor of Baton Rouge Democrat Melvin “Kip” Holden.

Young formally spoke at his election party at the Basin St. Station around 10:45 p.m.

Lieutenant governor duties include managing tourism and the film industry.

Since none of the candidates won with 50% of the vote there will be a runoff election between  Holden and Nungesser November 21.
