LAFAYETTE, La. – Two Jeanerette High School teachers are being hailed as heroes — Jena Meaux and Ali Martin. Jena took a bullet for her friend during the gunfire – saving her life — while Ali managed to pull the fire alarm alerting everyone to the tragedy inside.

Their coworkers say they are shocked that something like this happened in Lafayette, especially to someone they know. But it came as no surprise to members of the Jeanerette Tiger Family that Jena and Ali martin reacted in such a heroic way.

Jena is the librarian at Jeanerette High and has been for about 21 years while Ali has been teaching English for the past 7.

Principal Linda Freeman says the two went shopping just last week for uniforms for kids who couldn’t afford them.

“They are very compassionate teachers, dedicated, they have a passion for what they do. They love their jobs, they love these children,” Freeman said. “I think it is a tribute to them and to our profession because that’s how we react to situations we are very protective individuals. I am very proud of them.”

Both women were shot in the grand — one jumping in front of the other to take a bullet.

Members of the Tiger Family visited Jena in the hospital and say it was an emotional night, but she was in good spirits and whatever time they need to return to work they will be given.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for both Iberia Parish teachers injured in the shooting.
