NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) —73-year-old artist Lynda Benglis is finally getting her chance to shine. Her “Wave of the World” sculpture that was created for the 1984 World Exposition in New Orleans has returned home.
For three decades, the Wave sat deteriorating and nearly forgotten in a storage yard in Kenner. After some investigating the artist learned the whereabouts of her masterpiece, and with the help of private funding she was reunited with the 2-ton 17.5-foot statue.
The Wave was shipped to New York where it was restored to its original glory. The Wave was then transported to City Park, where it is on loan from the city of Kenner for the next four years.
The statue sits next to the big lake and the New Orleans Museum of Art. It’s illuminated at night, with a constant flow of water in its adjacent pool.
