DESTREHAN, La. (WGNO) — An overwhelming amount of support is pouring in to support a deputy who survived a brazen attack.

Thursday, St. Charles Sheriff’s deputy Burt Hazeltine appeared at a fundraiser in Destrehan.

This comes a week after he was shot ambush-style while conducting a traffic stop in a school zone in Paradis.

Thousands showed up to donate money and pick up a to-go box  at the fundraiser.

Deputy Hazeltine thanked his well-wishers.

“The prayers do work. I believe it’s through the prayers and the hand of God that I have been able to first of all be injured as little as I was,” says Hazeltine.

The St. Charles Sheriff’s Office won’t count the money raised until Monday.
