If you want to get value, you have to give it. And, the Saints certainly gave it Tuesday when they traded tight end Jimmy Graham.

Graham is a difference maker. He’s one of the best two or three players at his position in the NFL. He will be a perfect addition in Seattle for quarterback Russell Wilson and running back Marshawn Lynch.

What the Saints got in return is Max Unger, a Pro Bowl center who turns 29 in April, and at least a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. So, the Saints will own their pick in the draft, number 13, and Seattle’s first round pick, #31.

What are the Saints attempting to do?

They are hoping to parlay those picks into moving into the top five in the first round of the upcoming draft. My guess is, if the Saints trade up, they will select either a top flight wide receiver or a quarterback.

Yes, a quarterback.

Tampa Bay has the first pick. Quarterback Jameis Winston is the likely choice. Tennessee picks second. Quarterback is a need. But, they could decide that their future rests with Zach Mettenberger.

The next three teams selecting: Jacksonville, Oakland, and Washington are not likely to take a quarterback. And, Marcus Mariotta is the Saints kind of quarterback. He’s a high character leader with a proven resume. He is accurate. And, that is a must in the Saints short passing game.

One thing’s for sure. Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis have a plan. They would not have parted with one of the best tight ends in the game without one.

And, there’s something else the Jimmy Graham does. It sends a message to the locker-room that no one is safe.

After finishing 7-9, and losing their last five games at home, the Saints are getting more than a shakeup.

The first tremor hit Saints Drive Tuesday. And, there are more aftershocks likely to come.
