NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – He was the leader of a team of trailblazers and this week’s New Orleans Voodoo Athlete of the Week.

Warren Easton quarterback Deshawn Capers-Smith picked up a pair of awards Monday (12/15) at the final meeting of the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club.

Capers-Smith was named New Orleans Quarterback Club Player of the Year and Best Player of the Year, presented by Best Chevrolet.

Capers-Smith accounted for 70 touchdowns, 50 passing and 20 rushing.

He thanked head coach Tony Hull for a great high school life at Warren Easton.

“It has been the best, especially with coach Hull, and the coaching staff, especially with the team, too. It has been the best 4 years of my life,” Capers-Smith said.

Capers-Smith said it brought the team great joy to be the first Easton team to play in a state championship game since 1958.

“To see a lot of people come back from Orlando, Houston, California. It was real good,” Capers-Smith said.
