NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand went on an expletive-laced rant in the midst of a press conference about the shooting of Joe McKnight.

After speaking at length about the abuse he says the lawmakers and community leaders who have stood by his side in this case have taken, Normand read from a printout of what appeared to be social media posts critical of what he called “the process.”

“Our elected leaders that stood by me, and I want to thank them again, you are true leaders. You are credible leaders,” he said. “You did not do what was in your interest. You did what was in the best interest of the community, and I feel bad for you, I do.”

Amid repeated admonitions of “shame on you,” Normand read comments that delved deeply into racial and homophobic slurs.

“It’s not fair,” Normand said at the beginning of the stretch of expletives. “That’s the tone of what we are calling our elected leaders for simply standing up and simply saying ‘let justice prevail and let the process take its course.’”

Normand said that the tone of the comments go “on, and on, and on, and on,” while he said the elected officials were only trying to do their job.

“Shame on these folks,” Normand said. “Shame. We’re constantly talking and asking all of us to reach across the aisle, to embrace one another amongst the races, and when we do so, when we collectively stand together, this is what we call one another.”
