BATON ROUGE (WGNO) – Two New Orleans area state lawmakers are outraged over a birthday cake at the Capitol today.
State Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, D-New Orleans, posted a photo on her Twitter page of a birthday cake depicting a woman’s body. In the tweet, she said there was a second cake – removed from the party – that depicted a woman’s vagina.
The cakes were apparently ordered to celebrate the birthday of state Rep. Mark Abraham, R-Lake Charles. According to The Advocate, lawmakers deny that there was ever a second cake of a woman’s vagina.
Peterson told WGNO that she didn’t see the cake depicting a vagina, but that a staffer told her it was there and was removed before people saw it.
Peterson reportedly smashed the first cake – the one pictured below. State Rep. Jack McFarland, R-Jonesboro, told The Advocate that his wife made the cake as a joke.
The sign on the cake says “Happy Birthday Mark Abraham. He likes his cake and eats it too!!!!”
Peterson called the cakes “offensive” and “not funny.” The Advocate says Peterson yelled profanity at Abraham about the cake.
State Rep. Helena Moreno, D-New Orleans, called the cakes “disgusting.”
This isn’t the first time state lawmakers have taken heat for what many called sexist behavior.
In May, when the Legislature was debating a bill to raise the age minimum for strippers to 21, state Rep. Kenneth Havard, R-Jackson, proposed an amendment to the bill that would make it against the law for strippers to be older than 28 and weigh more than 160 pounds.
Havard later pulled the amendment and said it was a joke, but not before Louisiana made national headlines and drew the ire of women across the country.
