METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) – Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand is the latest local politician to call for Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni’s resignation.

Normand held a press conference Friday afternoon to offer his remarks on Yenni’s sexting scandal.

“Mike Yenni has been a good friend, a supporter and a political ally of mine for a number of years,” Normand said. “I thought he did a great job as mayor of Kenner, and I thought he was doing a great job as parish president. This is a very unfortunate situation. With the admissions he made, I think it sheds a different light on this subject. We have some significant issues facing the parish … in the best interest of … Jefferson Parish and fellow elected officials, the best decision for him to make is to resign.”

Normand’s press conference came just hours after the entire Jefferson Parish Council signed letters calling for Yenni’s resignation.

Yenni admitted in a commercial Thursday that he sent explicit text messages to a 17-year-old boy in 2015.

News broke more than a week ago that the FBI was investigating the text messages. The 17-year-old boy caught the eye of Yenni at a Jesuit High School function while Yenni was still the mayor of Kenner.  Yenni even reportedly offered the 17-year-old boy a job in his office so they could be closer.

Although he broke no state laws because 17 is the age of consent in Louisiana, there is a federal law that prohibits sending explicit text messages to anyone under 18.

Yenni said in the video that he will “work every day to prove that good people can rise from bad a decision.”
