METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) – A school bus crashed this afternoon into a canal in Metairie, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Col. John Fortunato, JPSO spokesman, said the school bus driver was leaving T.H. Harris Middle School and tried to make a U-turn onto Elise Avenue. That’s when she lost control and plunged into the canal.
There were 34 students on board when the bus crashed. Three students complained of minor injuries. They were taken to a local hospital.
Students told WGNO that the students on board were on the track team at T.H. Harris Middle School. They had just left school and were going to a track meet at East Jefferson High School.
They said they had to climb out of the back of the school bus.
