NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The lake bound lanes of Canal Street near Harrah’s reopened Tuesday afternoon. Much of the area had been closed and fenced off after an inactive tunnel collapsed creating a sinkhole in April (4/29).
The New Orleans City Council approved an emergency declaration to expedite repairs to the tunnel build in 1966. That work began on May 6, 2016.
Construction was completed safely, ahead of schedule and within the $5M budget, according to a release from the city.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu and other city officials held a reopening ceremony Tuesday afternoon.
