NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Monday’s “Purple Rain” second line in Treme welcomed hundreds of fans wearing purple as a final tribute to the pop star.

“He makes you feel free, makes you not feel scared about what you want to be, and his music just brings everyone together. And you can see that here,” Francesca Messori said.

Fans remembered Prince as a flamboyant artist whose musical talents varied throughout his 35-plus year career.

Funk, rock, soul and pop are just a sampling of his musical genius.

Many fan favorites were played in his honor at The Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar in Treme.

“The music makes you happy; it makes you want to dance,” Faye Penny said.

Prince sold more than 100 million records, won seven Grammys and was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Fans remembered him as a legend who defied sexual and racial stereotypes.

“He was one of my favorite artists, a great man and it was a sudden shock to everybody and to the music industry and to the world as a whole,” Keith Williams said.

Prince Rogers Nelson died last Thursday in his Minneapolis estate.

He was 57 years old.
