NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On Thursday, December 10th, the City of New Orleans and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will begin construction of the new, $19.5 million Wisner Blvd. Bridge Overpass that runs parallel to Bayou St. John and connects Wisner Blvd. over Interstate 610.
The Wisner Blvd. Bridge Overpass will be closed to the public during construction, which is scheduled to be completed in spring 2017.
The existing concrete girder structure will be demolished and replaced with a new steel girder bridge in the same location. The new bridge will include two 12 ft. travel lanes in each direction and a 12 ft. pedestrian and bicycle path along Bayou St. John.
Lake-bound traffic on Wisner Blvd. will be detoured to Desaix Blvd. and St. Bernard Ave.
River-bound traffic on Wisner Blvd. will be detoured to Harrison Ave. and Marconi Dr.
Pan-American Stadium at 194 Zachary Ave. will not be accessible from Wisner Blvd. The public can access Pan-American Stadium via Diagonal Dr. or Marconi Dr. in City Park.
The city’s Department of Pubic Works is reminding residents and commuters to use caution when driving, walking or bicycling near active construction sites.
