NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The Mystic Krewe of Nyx has reached more than 2,000 members this year. And, to them, that means they are a super krewe.

The all-female krewe went from around 500 riders five years ago, to “well over 2,200 this year,” Nyx revealed in a press release, with an addition of 720 riders since last year.

But, the man who claims to have invented the term “super krewe” isn’t so sure that’s enough.

“Nyx is not a super krewe,” says Errol Laborde, editor of New Orleans Magazine and author of Mardi Gras Chronicles of the New Orleans Carnival.

“Nyx has been very successful,” continues Laborde. “It certainly is one of the hot organizations. But usually when the term ‘super krewe’ is used by people who write about parades and critique parades, they are talking not just about the number of riders. They are talking about having original floats, float size, and having just an overall big parade.”

Laborde says if Nyx is considered a super krewe, then we would also have to consider Thoth, Muses, and Zulu super krewes. To him, the three super krewes remain Endymion, Bacchus, and Orpheus, which all roll the weekend before Mardi Gras.

Officially “super” or not, Nyx plans to put on a great show this year when it rolls on the Uptown route Wednesday, February 3, 2016.
