NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Friday afternoon, Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro announced that former New Orleans Saints player Darren Sharper would plead guilty to charges stemming from investigations in Louisiana, Arizona, Nevada, and California as well as federal charges.
Sharper was accused of drugging and assaulting women. Two other men faces some of the same charges in New Orleans.
A lawyer for suspect Erik Nunez says Sharper’s plea deal could help his client’s case. Attorney Jeff Smith says he didn’t strike a deal with prosecutors for Nunez to testify against Sharper because Nunez had no information that could contribute to the cases. Smith says that proves his client wasn’t around for any of the incidents that allegedly involve Sharper.
The other suspect involved is a former St. Bernard Sheriff’s deputy named Brandon Liccardi. His attorney did not return our call for comment.
According to Cannizzaro, the plea agreement will cover and wrap-up all of the cases against Sharper. Below is a portion of his written statement released Thursday afternoon.
“This afternoon, Darren Sharper announced in open court that he had entered into a plea agreement with respect to pending charges in Louisiana, as well as the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, and the United States of America. Pursuant to the terms of the agreement negotiated between the defendant’s attorneys and Federal and state prosecutors, we expect that he will begin entering formal guilty pleas as soon as Monday and that he will be in Louisiana within the next 30 days to plead guilty to his pending state and Federal charges in New Orleans.”
Saints fans we spoke with were already aware of the charges but were still surprised to find out about the global plea agreement. Click on the video button above for that portion of the story.
