NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – For many, going to the parades and getting a signature throw is a major highlight. This year, the Krewe of Carrollton is debuting their signature throw — shrimp boots!
News with a Twist’s Kenny Lopez went to their den to get the first look!
Muses glitters Carnival with their high-heels. Tucks throws plungers and Zulu “wows” with their coconuts. Starting this Mardi Gras, The Krewe of Carrollton is getting in on the mix with their own signature throw.
“The white shrimp boots are as New Orleans as it gets,” Bradley Charlesworth, member of Krewe of Carrollton, said.
“We wanted to get in on the signature throws because it does a good job of establishing an identity for any krewe,” he said.
Charlesworth said the idea started off as a joke.
“My brother-in-law told me his cousin was jumping in on our krewe. His heritage is from Chalmette, so we joked around with him that we should just throw some white shrimp boots,” Charlesworth said.
The idea soon became a reality. After hours of decorating, these boots were made for throwing.
“When we first started decorating, I thought they would look like a Kindergarten art project, but I’m pretty impressed with the final product,” he said.
Because Carrollton is an all-male krewe, Bradley says the boots needed some “female flair”.
“Luckily we had help from our wives. Being an all-male krewe, our themes probably aren’t as creative as the ladies in Muses. You’ll probably see a lot of boots with Krewe of Carrollton written on them, and Saints and LSU. We were watching some football and were learning to deal with all this glitter. It was pretty funny,” Charlesworth said.
They only made about 40 boots, and Float #18 is where to beg for them.
He said, “Since they’re so limited, we’re really looking for people who are cheering our krewe’s name. Maybe even holding up signs that say, ‘Show me your boots’! Just some enthusiasm here!”
As you can see, these boots aren’t only made for shrimping, but for catching too!
The Krewe of Carrollton is in its 91st year — one of the oldest Carnival krewes. They roll Uptown on Sunday, starting at noon.
